Saint-Nicolas Cathedral of Dalat: French heritage in Dalat

More than 70 years old, St. Nicholas Cathedral of Dalat or Rooster Church is a French architectural work attracting a large number of tourists to visit when they come to the city of flowers.
Started in 1931, the construction of the church was completed in 1942. With Roman-style architecture, this place is one of the oldest French architecture in Dalat.
The church was built in the shape of a cross which measures 65 meters in length and 47 meters in height. At this height, from the cathedral bell tower, you can see the entire city.
Locals nickname it “the church of the rooster” because of the 66 cm high bronze rooster which sits at the top of the cross dominating the roof of the bell tower. According to the New Testament, it is a symbol of penance.
The interior consists of three main spaces: a large hall in the middle and two small pavilions on either side. The pillars are designed symmetrically, connected by arches.
The statue of Christ and the cross are in the center of the church.
One of the two small pavilions is a place where the choir performs at parties or special occasions.
In addition to the reliefs hanging on the walls, visitors could also contemplate the colorful windows and decorative objects made by a workshop in France.
All details on the vertical planes follow European models. These dark brown wooden doors are also places where many people stop to take photos.
Next to the church, in the backyard, there is a reading space called "Paul's Bookstore".
In the garden next to the church, a statue of Our Lady is installed across Tran Phu Street, opposite the entrance to the cathedral. Many locals often come there to offer flowers and pray.
