Combined Mai Chau – Pu Luong circuit: What to see and what to do?

Do you want to make an authentic discovery in an unusual region during your trip to Vietnam? However, there is insufficient time to go further towards the high mountain regions in the North-West or North-East.
Thus, let yourself be seduced by the authenticity of the Mai Chau – Pu Luong region, located not too far from Hanoi. This region also has ethnic villages in the middle of enchanting landscapes of rivers and rice fields as far as the eye can see. It’s ideal for getting out into the green in 2-3 days.

MAI CHAU – MAI HICH
Located 140 km from Hanoi (about 3 hours by road), Mai Chau is characterized by its harmonious landscapes of green mountains, rice fields in the valley, and the traditional culture of the Thai ethnic group which has been preserved well for generations.
* What to see and do in Mai Chau?
- Take a hike through minority villages:Mai Chau and its surroundings are ideal for hiking for all tastes and levels. This is the opportunity to immerse yourself in country life, almost unchanged for centuries, in this superb rice-growing valley. Depending on the season, you can observe farmers plowing with a buffalo, transplanting, or harvesting rice.
- Take a bike ride: Just like hiking, a bike ride through the villages allows you to discover the peaceful rural atmosphere, as well as the rich local crafts including the making of traditional textiles such as silk or cotton from Mai Chau. The village paths are easy to cycle through. You can cycle easily to distant villages.
- Spend the night with locals: don't miss the opportunity to stay in a traditional Thai wooden house on stilts and enjoy their typical dishes.
- Attend a traditional White Thai dance performance and drink fermented rice wine. It will be a great way to fully immerse yourself in the local culture and end a day of discovery in a friendly atmosphere.
- Visit local markets: if the opportunity arises, you can visit a local market.
* Best time to travel to Mai Chau – Mai Hich
You can visit Mai Chau all year round.
- Between January and February: it is dry and cool, sometimes a little foggy on the hills.
- Between March and May: Good period with good weather. No rain or storm. Ideal for contemplating its magnificent rice fields.
- Between June and September: It is hot and humid. Temperatures can rise to 38°C.
- Between October and December: another good period. It is dry with blue skies.
Note that there are 2 rice harvests per year in Mai Chau, one at the end of May and the beginning of June and another in October.

PU LUONG
Located 150 km from Hanoi, just over a three-hour drive from Hanoi, the Pu Luong nature reserve has enchanting landscapes comparable to Sapa. You will be seduced by the harmonious beauty of the limestone reliefs, mountains, waterfalls, and tropical forests. This place is also appreciated for its superb rice terraces, its numerous hiking trails, and the authenticity of Thai and Muong life.
* What to see and do in Pu Luong?
- Go trekking:Pu Luong will remain a memorable stopover if you wish to go trekking during your tour in Vietnam. This region is welcomed by the thousands of trekkers around the world. Nothing better than a hike to admire its fabulous scenery of rice terraces and its many picturesque little villages. Particularly, when June arrives, the rice terraces turn yellow. What magnificent landscapes that please the eyes! Along the way, you can also find many waterwheels, a traditional method of water collection and irrigation for several minority ethnic groups.
- Take a bamboo raft ride on the river: A bamboo raft ride on the river will offer you an exceptional experience. You will get to know this fabulous natural setting in more depth and you will have the impression that your mind is calmer.
- Spend the night with a local: Just like in Mai Chau, you can also spend the night in a house on stilts. Here, you will be warmly welcomed with open arms and share meals with locals. It will surely be an experience to tell throughout your life.
* Best time to visit Pu Luong
The climate of Pu Luong is similar to that of Mai Chau.
There are also two rice harvests per year in Pu Luong, one in late May, and early June, and another in October. We advise you to favor these months to be able to fully enjoy the superb rice terraces.

MAI CHAU-PU LUONG COMBINED TOUR

Day 2: Mai Hich – Pu Luong: Trek to the village of Eo Ken and Hang, then transfer to Pu Luong, ride to Chieng Lau, bamboo raft trip
Day 3: Pu Luong discovery: Day of trekking to the villages of Kho Muong – Uoi – Lan Ngoai of the Thai
Day 4: Pu Luong – Hanoi: Hike through the villages of Leo – Chu – Mo – Danh, return to Hanoi, visit the sacred fish stream at Cam Luong
3. Ninh Binh – Pu Luong – Mai Chau – Hanoi (3 days)
Day 2: Pu Luong – Uoi village – Lan Ngoai – Eo Ken – Ban Hang – Mai Hich: discover the Pu Luong nature reserve, meet the Thais in Uoi villages and Lan Ngoai, Eo Ken, Ban Hang. Transfer to Mai Chau. Night at a local’s place.
Day 3: Mai Hich discovery – Hanoi: Easy hike or bike ride to discover the Thai villages in Mai Hich, and return to Hanoi.
