What to do on My Khe beach, a golden treasure of Da Nang
- on Aug 16, 2019 By: BN
Da Nang, formerly known as Tourane during the colonial period is the third largest city in Vietnam and one of the first ports in the country which outgrew the ancient city of Hoi An. In the 18th century the port activities in Hoi An began to decline and today the town is now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Da Nang, a dynamic city, is also one of the most popular seaside resorts in Vietnam. Travelers love to come to Da Nang to enjoy its sunny tropical climate which persists for most of the year. Its bright white sand beaches are an incredible place to kick back and relax. My Khe beach is regarded as the most iconic and enjoyable beach in Da Nang.
History of My Khe Beach during the Vietnam War
Today My Khe beach is a beautiful stretch of white sand lined with clear water that is appreciated by many travelers who pass through the seaside resorts of Da Nang. During the Vietnam War it was a place the American soldiers would come for a little R&R.
At that time the GI had nicknamed My Khe beach "China Beach". During the War the US military had an important military base in Da Nang. The American army stationed nearly 75,000 men here. With this concentration of soldiers the US Chief of Staff decided to make this long white sandy paradise a "rest & recuperation center" for US soldiers.
Between missions, the American soldiers would come for a few days to relax on this beautiful beach. They came to swim, surf, BBQ and have fun with the nurses who also came here to relax. A 61-episode American television series created by John Sacret Young and William Broyles Jr. told the story of the lives of the female military and civilian personnel at a hospital in Da Nang during the Vietnam War. This series is called “China Beach” and was broadcast between April 26, 1988 and July 22, 1991 on the ABC network in the United States. In France, the series was broadcast from January 23, 1990 on La Cinq.
