Phu Quoc: Must-sees for a first trip to Vietnam
- on Sep 28, 2024 By: Ngoc Nguyen
Ranked second among the 25 best islands in the world in 2024, Phu Quoc offers a multitude of unforgettable exploration and relaxation experiences. That is why the world-renowned tourist guide, Lonely Planet, has compiled in its travel diary some valuable recommendations on travel, gastronomy, must-see destinations and prices for those who wish to explore Phu Quoc. Here is an overview of these recommendations.
Phu Quoc: the pearl of the Gulf of Thailand
Phu Quoc, the jewel of the Gulf of Thailand, is made up of 22 islands covering an area comparable to that of Singapore. This island, populated by nearly 200,000 inhabitants, attracts between 3 and 5 million tourists each year, fascinated by its heavenly landscapes and its unique atmosphere.
Phu Quoc is also the only tourist destination in Vietnam where foreign travellers enjoy a 30-day visa exemption, making access to this island gem even easier.
As Vietnam’s premier tourist resort, Phu Quoc is distinguished by the exceptional quality of its accommodation and tour services. From luxurious hotels to resorts to gourmet restaurants, everything is designed to offer visitors an unforgettable experience.
With its pristine white sand beaches, crystal clear waters and numerous leisure activities, Phu Quoc is a must-see destination for those looking to combine relaxation and adventure. Whether you’re looking to lounge under coconut trees or explore the seabed, this island will meet all your expectations.
When is the best time to visit Phu Quoc?
Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s paradise island, is divided into two distinct seasons: the dry season, from November to April, and the rainy season, from May to October. During the rainy season, sunny days are rare, making swimming in hotel pools a sensible option.
However, one major environmental challenge persists in Phu Quoc: waste management. The island produces an average of 190 tonnes of waste per day, far exceeding its treatment capacity, which is mainly limited to landfill and incineration. The months of October and November often bring north-easterly winds, which blow waste and bad smells from fishing boats in the Gulf of Thailand onto the island’s eastern beaches.
Although most mid-range hotels and resorts manage their waste quite well, this environmental issue remains a concern. Tourists are encouraged to be aware of this reality when visiting.
How many days should you stay in Phu Quoc?
For a short beach holiday at the end of your Vietnam trip, three days in Phu Quoc is enough to explore the island’s iconic sites. If you are planning a longer stay, consider varying your accommodations: a few nights in the centre (Duong Dong Town), a few nights in the North of the island near Vinpearl, visiting an amusement park and safari, and a few nights in the South, known for its beautiful beaches.
How to get to Phu Quoc?
Phu Quoc is easily accessible with direct flights from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Hai Phong. The island is also connected internationally with direct flights from Seoul, Taipei and Bangkok. High-speed ferries connect Ha Tien and Rach Gia in Kien Giang province to Phu Quoc.
Phu Quoc Airport is 14 kilometres from Duong Dong, about a 15- to 20-minute taxi ride. Most major hotels offer an airport shuttle service. Taxis are also a popular and affordable option. In Duong Dong, you will find many restaurants, spas and convenience stores.
Mobile apps for transportation like Grab or Xanh SM are very popular and cost only a few tens of thousands of dongs. If you have a driver's license, renting a motorbike is a great option to explore this island freely.

What to do in Phu Quoc?
Snorkelling
The snorkelling tours to 2-3 islands are very popular in Phu Quoc. You can swim, relax on the beach, and fish along the way with a simple hook and line instead of a fishing rod. Lunch is usually included on these tours. Tours often have enough people to offer a reasonable rate. If you can, opt for tours that visit multiple islands or in small groups.
Many tours end in Hon Thom, where visitors can take the cable car back to the main island.
Cable Car to Hon Thom Island
The cable car ride to Hon Thom takes about 15 minutes and covers a distance of 8 kilometres. It is the longest three-wire cable car in the world, offering spectacular panoramic views. On the island, visitors can enjoy water games, slides, an observation tower, as well as activities such as underwater walking, parasailing, and kayaking. Remember that these activities are usually not included in the tour price.
Hoang Hon City Tour
Opened in late 2023, Hoang Hon City recreates the atmosphere of Mediterranean beaches. The city features colourful houses with terracotta roofs, cobblestone streets, and charming cafes and shops. Among the many attractions are the “Kissing Bridge,” nightly fireworks, water puppet shows, street art performances, a seaside night market, and the “Kiss of the Sea” (Nụ hôn của biển) show, which includes acrobatics, fireworks, and light shows on the water.
Discover the paradise beaches
With nearly 20 beaches, Phu Quoc offers a variety of options, ranging from wild beaches to famous beaches with crystal clear waters and pristine white sand. Two of the most notable are in the south: Bai Sao and Bai Khem.
Bai Sao is lively with many restaurants and beach clubs. To avoid the crowds, it is advisable to go early or walk north, where you can rent a lounger (albeit expensive) and relax with a beach towel. Bai Khem is quieter, but is home to many large resorts. Consider spending a little more so that you can have a few nights in this peaceful place.
Admire the sunrise or sunset from the heights
Phu Quoc is known for its spectacular sunrises and sunsets in orange, pink and purple hues. Getting up early to see the sunrise on the east coast or heading to the west coast to watch the sunset is an unforgettable experience. While any beachfront location is ideal, the view from INK360, located on the 19th floor of the InterContinental Phu Quoc Long Beach Resort, is particularly exceptional. Arrive early to enjoy a cocktail while watching the sun slowly set.
Sample the Specialties
Phu Quoc is full of local specialties to discover. Visit a sim wine factory, explore pepper plantations, pearl farms, and Nuoc Mam factories. Phu Quoc Nuoc Mam is renowned for its exceptional quality throughout Vietnam. Drive through the national park in the North of the island to try local honey and enjoy a fresh seafood lunch.
Cost of travel to Phu Quoc
As an island, the cost of staying in Phu Quoc is generally 10-20% higher than on the mainland. ATMs are available in the city centre, luxury hotels and tourist sites. Small restaurants and shops mainly accept cash payments.
