In 2011, Phu Quoc officially became Vietnam’s first island city, marking a crucial step in the socio-economic development of Kien Giang province and the Mekong Delta. Alongside Rach Gia and Ha Tien, Phu Quoc is positioned as one of the three locomotives of this dynamic region, illustrating the considerable potential of this island for the future of the country.
An archipelago with natural and historical riches
Phu Quoc is an archipelago comprising 22 islands, the largest of which, the same name, covers 567 km² and is 50 km long. This land is distinguished by its rich cultural history and traditions, shaped by more than 300 years of existence. The island is also known for its exceptional natural beauty, with its white sand beaches, turquoise waters and lush vegetation, making it a tourist destination of choice for travelers from all over the world.
From hell to paradise
Historically, Phu Quoc was considered “hell on earth” before 1975. The island was then home to prisons where many political prisoners were detained. However, this dark period is now a thing of the past, and Phu Quoc has reinvented itself to become the “Pearl of Asia”. It is now recognized as one of the top 10 most renowned islands on the planet, attracting visitors fascinated by its tumultuous history and spectacular renaissance.
The territory of Phu Quoc has a varied terrain, characterized by a gently sloping terrain from north to south, dotted with 99 mountains and hills, and home to a vast area of primary forest. The city comprises 9 administrative units: Duong Dong Ward, An Thoi Ward, and the communes of Ham Ninh, Duong To, Ganh Dau, Bai Thom, Cua Duong, Cua Can, and Tho Chau. Each of these areas contributes to the diversity and richness of Phu Quoc, offering visitors a range of cultural and natural experiences.
Economic growth and tourism attractiveness
Between 2010 and 2019, the annual GDP growth rate of Phu Quoc has consistently exceeded 38%, 6 times the national average. This spectacular growth results from a series of proactive policies aimed at attracting investment and promoting the island’s economic development. Phu Quoc has become the main investment destination in Kien Giang province, with over 320 projects underway and a total registered capital of over 340 trillion dong. Renowned companies such as Sun Group, Vingroup and BIM Group have played a key role in this dynamic by investing heavily in tourism development and infrastructure projects.
In 2020, after the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, tourism in Phu Quoc quickly regained its momentum. By November 2020, the number of visitors had increased by 28% compared to October. In December 2020, the island saw an average of 60-70 daily flights, rising to 80-90 flights during weekends. Last New Year saw a significant increase in the number of tourists, confirming Phu Quoc’s growing appeal despite the challenges posed by the global pandemic.
Phu Quoc continues to grow with ambitious projects aimed at strengthening its tourism infrastructure and improving the quality of life of its residents. The Vietnamese government has implemented several initiatives to support the sustainable development of the island, with a focus on preserving the environment and promoting local culture. Projects such as developing a modern transportation network, building luxury resorts, and improving public services illustrate this commitment to making Phu Quoc a world-class destination.
Phu Quoc, as Vietnam’s first island city, plays a crucial role in the region’s economic and tourism development. With its massive investment, investment-friendly policies and unique natural and cultural heritage, Phu Quoc continues to strengthen its position as one of the most sought-after destinations in Vietnam and beyond. The island, with its harmonious blend of modern development and natural beauty, embodies the promising future of Vietnamese tourism. Continued efforts to improve infrastructure, preserve the environment and promote local culture will ensure that Phu Quoc remains an attractive and sustainable destination for future generations.
