Covering an area of 22 hectares, the Phat Diem cathedral complex incorporates a main church, five chapels, three grottoes, a bell tower, a lake, gardens, statues, carvings, and relief works. Among these features, visitors are particularly drawn to the Chapel of Immaculate Heart of Mary, largely known under the name “nha tho da” (Stone Church in English).

The Chapel of Immaculate Heart of Mary

Nestled northwest of the Phat Diem Cathedral Complex, the Chapel of the Immaculate Heart of Mary stands out as one of the most remarkable structures in this sacred enclave. Constructed in 1883, this chapel was the first building erected on the site and is made entirely of stone, encompassing everything from its foundation to its walls, columns, spire, and altar, down to the smallest details, such as the window grilles.

Despite its modest dimensions—measuring 15.3 meters in length, 8.5 meters in width, and 6 meters in height—the chapel enchants visitors with the care and delicacy evident in every aspect of its architecture. The sculptures that adorn the chapel reflect the beauty and serenity of the Vietnamese countryside, showcasing natural elements typical of Ninh Binh’s landscape, such as pine trees, chrysanthemums, bamboo, plums, and lotus flowers.

Phuong Dinh, or The Bell Tower

The Bell Tower, commonly known as the “Square House” and Phuong Dinh, is a striking architectural feature of the complex. This three-story structure is constructed almost entirely of solid bluestone and measures 24 meters in length, 27 meters in width, and 25 meters in height. The first floor contains three spacious halls, while a large drum hangs from the second floor. On the third floor, you will find a 1.4-meter-high bronze bell weighing 2,000 kilograms, which was cast in 1890. The tower is topped with four turrets and a central tower, all featuring curving “boat” roofs, a characteristic element of Vietnamese pagoda design. Coupled with the triple-arched gates of traditional Vietnamese architecture, this gives visitors the impression that Phuong Dinh is a pagoda at first glance.

The Main Church

Inaugurated in 1891, this majestic structure spans 74 meters in length and 21 meters in width, distinguished by its finely sculpted roof with many distinctive features. Inside, six rows of magnificent ironwood columns stand, with two central columns reaching an impressive height of 11 meters and weighing up to 10 tons each. The main altar, a monolithic piece measuring 3 meters in length, 0.9 meters in width, and 0.8 meters in height, is enhanced with delicate floral sculptures on three sides. This creation exemplifies the harmony between Eastern and Western architecture and highlights the craftsmanship of 19th-century artisans.

Chapels and Man-made grottoes

The Phat Diem Cathedral Complex, emblematic of Vietnamese religious architecture, is not limited to the Main Church and the Chapel of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. This complex is home to four other chapels: the Chapel of Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Chapel of St. Roch, the Chapel of St. Joseph, and the Chapel of St. Peter. Each chapel has its own distinct design, reflecting the pluralistic approach to spirituality in Phat Diem and the surrounding area. 

Visitors can also admire the three grottoes: Burial Mountain (later renamed to Birthday Mountain), Mount Lourdes, and Skull Mountain. Built respectively in 1875, 1896, and 1925, these artificial caves bear careful attention to keeping the Vietnamese fengshui of “water in the front, mountains behind”.
