Famous hills, peaks and mountains of Vietnam

Whether you are a seasoned hiker or simply curious, discover the famous hills, peaks, mountains and peaks of Vietnam from the Tonkinese Alps to the Mekong Delta via the maritime and terrestrial Halong Bay, the coast and the Central Highlands.
1. Fan Si Pan, the “roof of Indochina”
3,143 m high, this mountain is the highest point in Indochina. The Fan Si Pan is part of the Hoàng Liên S?n mountain range and is located about ten kilometres from Sapa. Its ascent is difficult and is reserved for experienced walkers used to the mountains and in sufficient physical condition to cross large elevations. For non-walkers, it is still possible to reach the highest peak in Vietnam by taking a cable car. When the fog dissipates, you will enjoy a magnificent view of the surrounding valleys.

2. Tay Con Linh, the "roof of the Northeast"
With an altitude of 2,427 m, it is the highest peak in northeast Vietnam. Located in Ha Giang province and spanning the two districts of Hoang Su Phi and Vi Xuyen, Tay Con Linh is a mythical peak that is even considered sacred by the La Chi ethnic group who live at its base and on its slopes where it cultivates the famous shan tuyet tea. Climbing Tay Con Linh is a unique experience that takes place partly in the middle of the rice terraces. But to enjoy this show, it is essential to have training and good physical condition.

3. Titov Peak, wonder of Halong Bay
In memory of astronaut Gherman Stepanovich Titov's visit to Halong Bay, Ho Chi Minh named an island after this hero of the former Soviet Union. On this island sits a limestone peak whose summit offers a breath-taking view of part of the marine landscapes of Halong Bay, classified as a natural heritage site by Unesco. Coming down from the peak, you can take advantage of the beautiful beach of the island to take a good swim in the sea!

4. Hang Mua Peak, in the heart of “Halong Bay on land”
Hang Mua Peak offers breath-taking views of the magnificent landscapes of the UNESCO-listed Trang An Landscape Complex. To enjoy it, you will first have to climb the 450 steps zigzagging from the foot to the top of the peak where the pagoda of the same name and its belvedere are perched. You will be rewarded with a sensational panoramic view with an infinite carpet of rice fields on one side and an eruption of limestone peaks crossed by the Ngo Dong River on the other.

5. Lattre Mountain
Located in Ninh Binh, the capital of the province of the same name, this mountain which guarded the passage of river traffic on the Day River saw the death of Bernard de Lattre de Tassigny, son of the High Commissioner, Commander-in-Chief in Indochina. While commanding a squadron made up largely of Vietnamese volunteers, Bernard was pierced by eighty mortar shrapnel during the offensive led by General Giap on the river on March 30, 1951. At the top of the mountain is a stele in the memory of the soldier and a pagoda. The view of the river is not bad.

6. The Marble Mountains
The Marble Mountains or Ng? Hành S?n in Vietnamese are a group of five marble and limestone hills located South of Danang City. Five in number like the five elements, the mountains are a very important place of Buddhist and Hindu pilgrimage. On your way there, you will discover many shrines, temples and pagodas carved into the limestone. Statues sometimes carved out of the rock, such as a magnificent Buddha dating from the 12th century, adorn these Buddhist sanctuaries. By climbing to the top of Thuy Son mountain, you can enjoy a superb panoramic view of the region, the coastline and the other marble mountains.

7. Lang Biang Mountain
The Lang Biang mountain is located about twelve kilometres from Dalat, in the Central Highlands. It culminates at 2,167 m above sea level and dominates the plateau of the same name. This plateau was explored by Doctor Yersin, the one who discovered the plague bacillus in 1894. From this exploration, a few years later, with the help of the governor of Indochina Paul Doumer, he would create the health resort of Dalat where many settlers from Saigon came to flee its sultry climate. In 2015, the Lang Biang area was recognized as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO.

8. Sam Mountain
It is not its size but its cultural and spiritual value that brought Sam Mountain into the circle of famous mountains and peaks of Vietnam. This mountain, only 230 metres high, which breaks with the flatness of the Mekong Delta, is a high place of Buddhist pilgrimage. At its base and on its flanks are many temples and pagodas assiduously frequented by Vietnamese Buddhists. From the top, you enjoy a very beautiful panoramic view of the countryside of Chau Doc carpeted with rice fields.
