This guide provides comprehensive information about this incredible destination, ensuring a safe and cost-effective visit to Van Long Lagoon and its surrounding areas.
Introduction to Van Long Lagoon
Located in the Gia Vien District, Ninh Binh Province, about 80 km south of Hanoi, Van Long Nature Reserve is the largest wetland in Northern Vietnam. This area has two primary ecosystems: wetlands and limestone forests. Additionally, it encompasses other natural landscapes, including grasslands, fields, and traditional villages. Spanning nearly 3,500 hectares, the reserve is a sanctuary for many rare species of flora and fauna, including the critically endangered Delacour’s langur (Trachypithecus delacouri), a primate endemic to Vietnam that requires urgent conservation efforts.
Designated a protected area since 1999, Van Long Nature Reserve actively strives to preserve its ecosystems, while providing visitors an unforgettable journey amid Vietnam's rich natural heritage.
Best time to visit Van Long Lagoon
The Van Long Nature Reserve welcomes visitors year-round owing to its diverse ecosystem. The best time to visit Van Long depends on the experience you seek.
If you want to marvel at the lotuses in full bloom, visit Van Long Lagoon in summer, especially during the period from May to June. This is the lotus season, when the lagoon is covered in a sea of vibrant pink lotus flowers, filling the air with their delicate fragrance. The vibrant blooms contrast beautifully with the lush greenery and mirror-like water surface, creating a breathtaking scene. This is the best time for photographers and nature lovers.
The time frame from November to April of the following year is when migratory birds from the north arrive to nest. This is absolutely the ideal time totravel to Van Long as it coincides with the dry season, perfect for wildlife exploration without worrying about rain.
While you can visit Van Long Lagoon throughout the year, we advise against traveling during the rainy season, as overcast skies may hinder your ability to fully appreciate the lagoon’s beauty.
Best Time of the Day: Locals suggest visiting between 3:30 PM and 4:30 PM. During this golden hour, you can witness flocks of birds, including storks, soaring in search of food and returning to their nests. If you're lucky, you might also spot Delacour’s langurs feeding on tree leaves in the limestone mountains. The late afternoon provides a more pleasant temperature than the midday heat, making it the best time for wildlife sightings.
