Cave exploration is one of Vang Vieng’s leading tourist activities. Some of the caves are often flooded and can only be reached by swimming, while others are located higher up and can be reached on foot, namely the magnificent Tham Xang or Elephant Cave, for it features a stalactite in the shape of an elephant's head, hence the name. Many of these caves were used as refuge from the massive American bombardments during the Vietnam War.
