The Origin of the Name Thung Nai

Formerly called "Muong Thang," meaning "land of the Muong people," this area has transformed into a peaceful haven prized for its lush nature and pleasant climate. Over time, the increasing presence of deer in the region led to its renaming as Thung Nai, which can be translated as "valley of deer."

Located 100 km north of Hanoi, in the commune of Cao Phong, Hoa Binh Province, Thung Nai is famous for its picturesque landscapes along the Da River. In the 1980s, the construction of the Song Da hydroelectric power station turned Thung Nai into a vast water reservoir, surrounded by undulating mountains. Today, this region has become a sought-after destination for travelers looking for tranquility and natural beauty. Known as the "Halong Bay on land" in the heart of the Northwest forest, Thung Nai is perfect for relaxing stays with family or friends.
