Gom Show – The Secret Song of Vietnamese Ceramics
- on Sep 16, 2025 By: Trang Nhung NGUYEN
A brand-new and surprising performance has recently emerged in Hanoi, drawing the attention of many travelers and culture enthusiasts. The Gom Show offers a unique experience: transforming Vietnamese ceramics into musical instruments. More than just an artistic performance, it is a journey into the soul of Vietnam, where earth, shaped for centuries, becomes a bearer of sounds, emotions, and collective memory.
An innovative concept
The Gom Show was born from the imagination of the Đàn Đó collective, a group of Vietnamese artists passionate about blending tradition and modernity. Their idea: to transform everyday objects into genuine instruments. Jars, pots, terracotta bells, hand-shaped percussion... each piece becomes a source of new sounds. Inspired by ancient forms yet adapted to the contemporary stage, these instruments resonate like an echo from the depths of the earth.
This performance highlights not only the artisans’ know-how but also the soul of Vietnam’s ethnic communities. The audience discovers music rooted in the elements – earth, water, fire – and connected to the traditions of the country’s northern and central minorities.
A journey in eight scenes
The show unfolds through eight musical sequences which, without narration, take spectators on a sensory journey. Each scene bears an evocative title, such as “The Return,” “The Time Before,” or “Downstream.” Together, they form a cycle following the rhythm of a village day: awakening dawn, lively festivities, a more peaceful afternoon, and the return to evening silence.
Spectators are invited to be guided by sounds. The percussion of jars resonates like a heartbeat, terracotta bells chime with airy lightness, and water instruments bring unexpected freshness. On stage, music is enriched by refined lighting, choreographic gestures, and even live pottery demonstrations, turning the show into a total immersion.
An experience both intimate and universal
What makes the Gom Show so special is its universal language. No need to understand Vietnamese to grasp its depth. Here, no words, only sounds, vibrations, and raw emotions. The audience experiences something both meditative and festive, balancing ancestral echoes with contemporary creation.
Each person receives it differently: some close their eyes to savor the resonances, others are hypnotized by the interplay of light and the artists’ gestures. One leaves with the impression of having heard the earth itself sing.
